Dans le village rural de Sayit, au Kenya, les habitants sont sur le point de recevoir pour la première fois les titres de propriété de leurs terres. Mais pour Star, 38 ans, célibataire et sans connaissance de ses origines familiales, cette nouvelle menace de lui faire perdre sa maison : l’attribution des terres repose sur les liens de parenté.

Lorsqu’elle découvre par hasard une photographie d’elle enfant dans un livre consacré aux peuples nomades, Star croit reconnaître, sur l’image, les marques tribales d’une femme du village. Cette découverte déclenche une quête pour retrouver ses origines et faire reconnaître sa place au sein de la communauté.

Avec humour et acuité, One Woman One Bra explore les questions d’identité, d’appartenance, de propriété et de condition féminine, tout en portant un regard critique sur l’intervention des ONG et la manière dont certains récits africains sont façonnés pour répondre aux attentes occidentales.

In the rural Kenyan village of Sayit, residents are about to receive legal title to their land for the first time. But for Star, a 38-year-old unmarried woman who knows nothing about her parentage, the process threatens to leave her without a home: land ownership is being determined through family ties.

When Star unexpectedly discovers a childhood photograph of herself in a book about nomadic peoples, she notices the familiar tribal markings of a woman from her village. The discovery sets her on a search for her origins and for recognition of her place within the community.

Blending humor with sharp social commentary, One Woman One Bra explores identity, belonging, land ownership and a woman's place within a structured society, while also questioning the role of NGOs and the pressure to reshape African narratives to conform to Western expectations.
