Ladies: For Mrs. Reid

Columbia Global Paris Center

On September 28, 2019, at 8:00pm, Hélène Schmitt (violin) and Antoine de Grolée (piano) will perform works by female composers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century who lived in the same period as Mrs. Reid, the founder of Reid Hall. Before the concert, at 7:00 pm, Brunhilde Biebuyck will give an illustrated lecture on the history of Reid Hall.

Si rien n’est plus inégal que les destins de musiciens, que faudrait-il dire alors de ceux des musiciennes ? On peut mieux comprendre à présent combien les vies des musiciennes furent jadis semées d’obstacles et zébrées d’inflexibles interdits dont on n’a pas encore effacé la trace aujourd’hui. La femme musicienne se trouva pendant longtemps au centre d’une terrible ambivalence. D’un côté la musique, glorifiée par la bonne société, participait des accomplissements nécessaires au beau sexe, au point d’en être l’un des tout premiers charmes, et de l’autre cette même société multipliait les interdits et couvrait d’opprobre les femmes talentueuses si elles passaient les bornes : jouer en public et pire encore gagner de l’argent, étant ainsi comparables aux hommes. Pourtant la passion de la musique fit tout risquer à certaines et endurer les rançons de leur talent voire de leur succès. Saluons Pauline Viardot, muse de Gounot, adorée par Tourgueniev ou encore inpirant à Schumann son Liederkreis, saluons Lili Boulanger, brillante comète à la si brève carrière. Découvrons l’américaine Amy Beach, la pianiste virtuose et compositrice autodidacte au langage passionné, ou Rebecca Clarke, américaine par son père, donc la musique s’envole vers des sommets de modernité. Sans oublier Florentine Mulsant, compositrice née en 1962 dont le langage semble émaner de ses brillantes aînées.

Hélène Schmitt studied baroque violin at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Musique in Paris and in Basel and has received numerous awards, including Musica Antiqua in Bruges, Van Wassenaer in Amsterdam and the International Johann Wilhelm Schmelzer Competition in Melk. She holds the Chair of Baroque Violin at the music conservatory of Boulogne-Billancourt (Paris). She focuses particularly on the Italian and German repertoire for solo violin of the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth century and performs with internationally renowned musical partners such as Jörg-Andreas Bötticher Blandine Rannou, Pierre Hantai, Gaetano Nasillo and Rolf Lislevand. She founded the Ensemble Luceram in order to perform also works with augmented instrumentation and the Quatuor Baillot to perform strings quartets of the 18th century. Hélène Schmitt has recorded numerous CDs for the French label ALPHA, among these the complete Sonatas and Partitas for violin solo by J. S. Bach, and most recently a CD with the Rosary Sonatas by Biber (Aeolus, 2017) and works by Johann Georg Pisendel und Florentine Mulsant for the solo violine (Maguelone, 2018). A recording with works by Jean-Marie Leclair will be released in 2019.
Antoine de Grolée graduated in 2005 with high honors from the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et dance in Lyon, subsequently studying with Hortense Cartier-Bresson and at the Piano Academy of Imola in Italy, with Boris Petrushansky. He won the first prize in both the FLAME European Young Talents Competition and the Teresa Llacuna Competition, was awarded a Musical Patronage Grant from the French Group "Banque Populaire", and is part of the program "Declic" of Culturesfrance. He has performed in numerous festivals throughout Europe and in Argentina, and has been a soloist with several orchestras. As a chamber musician he has performed with partners such as Hortense Cartier- Bresson, David Guerrier, Eric Crambes, Pierre Fouchenneret, and the Joachim String Quartet. Since September of 2008, he has accompanied the Violin class of Michael Hentz at the CNSMD in Paris. He has performed on medici.tv and on France Musique, notably as the guest of Gaelle Le Gallic in her program “In the Courtyard of the Greats”, where he was awarded the audience prize.
