Did you know Notre Dame Cathedral is the most visited monument in the Western world? With around 15 millions every year, the cathedral draw more people than before the terrible fire in 2019.
After intensive care and restoration, Notre Dame shows a much clearer side than before. Light is omnipresent and the cleaned stone has a bright yellow tint that gives off an unprecedented warmth.
The tour will first offer a description of the facade with the three portals and the gallery of the kings. The cathedral’s forecourt also keeps interesting traces of the past, when, before Haussmann, houses and chapels lined the streets outside.
Inside, the brand new furniture is a striking contrast with the gothic architecture. All the chapels, including their magnificent painted walls, have been fully restored.
One of them is dedicated to the Latin-American community, another one to the Polish one. There’s also an evocation of the Middle-Eastern Christians as well as the Chinese ones. With priests taught in several languages, Notre Dame proposes a dialogue to everyone, whatever their origin or faith.
The two great roses added in the 13th century are some of the highlights of the Cathedral. They appear in their full shining beauty and boast dome of the largest ones in the world.
The choir area will show the beautiful 18th century stalls and the wall counting on both sides, the life of Jesus. The most secluded and sacred part is all marble with 18th century decor.
At the back, in the Virgin’s chapel a huge shrine contains the most holy relic in the Christian world. The Crown of thorns was brought to France in 1245 and is now shown for veneration every Friday afternoon.
The tour will also show funeral art, various artefacts, eerie sights and recount countless anecdotes linked to this very special site. One of the plaques recalls the start of the present building’s construction in 1163.
