Discover, experience, and learn more about Swedish folk music with Kerstin Ivares.

About this event

Musician? Would you like to learn more about Swedish Folk Music? Would you like to experiment integrating your own musical style within the dancing tunes of Swedish folk music! Come and join our free of charge masterclass..

Kerstin is a professional Swedish fiddler, and will be presenting the basics of traditional Swedish/Nordic folk music. The masterclass is open for all instrumentalists and vocals of all forms and styles.

Having her roots in Rättvik near lake Siljan in the region of Dalarna in Sweden, where the long going tradition of folk music is still alive and strong, Kerstin developed a focus in playing for dancing, with the challenges of getting the right swing and the right feeling and communication between musicians and dancers. Moreover, she is an expert in ceremonial repertoire, with a lot of experience of traditional Nordic weddings and other dancing celebrations.

Kerstin’s approach to folk music is a lifelong learning and sharing experience. I started playing at the age of 6, studied violin technique at school and later at the conservatory, learnt traditional Swedish folk music tunes and styles from playing with other fiddlers, but also from attending courses at Malungs folkhögskola, Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Umeå University and lately Gamleby folkhögskola.

Kerstin has a wide teaching experience as she was a conductor of Stockholms spelmanslag for some years, occasionally also a conductor of Rättviks spelmanslag (a spelmanslag is like an ‘orchestra’ of folk fiddlers). She also conducted several courses/workshops in Sweden, as well as in Swedish immigrant areas of the US, at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis and Folklore Village in Wisconsin. Last summer Kerstin was awarded the silver badge and honorable national title of Riksspelman by the Swedish Zorn jury.
