Summer Space Academy – Exploring Space Together
As part of the Astronaut for a Day contest, the Luxembourg Space Agency, in collaboration with the Austrian Research Promotion Agency and the Estonian Space Office, is proud to present the Summer Space Academy. This series of webinars is designed to introduce participants to exciting topics in space.
This second webinar, hosted by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency, will focus on Mars Exploration in 3D and will be presented by Gerhard Paar from the Joanneum Research.
Gerhard Paar heads the Space Robotics & Instruments Team at JOANNEUM RESEARCH in Graz, Austria. He joined the company in 1988 after graduating in technical mathematics from Graz University of Technology and has been working in image processing in the industrial sector and in space robotics ever since. With more than 25 years of project management experience, he has coordinated several EU projects with dozens of international partners in these fields and has been and continues to be the coordinator of dozens of research and development projects at the JOANNEUM RESEARCH Institute DIGITAL. Gerhard is co-investigator of several instruments on the ESA ExoMars Rover mission, as well as the Mastcam-Z camera on NASA's Mars 2020 Rover mission, and he is a member of the science team for NASA's MSL Mars Rover mission and ESA's Hera mission to the Didymos asteroid system. From 2013 to 2016, he headed the Image Machine Vision Applications group at the DIGITAL institute. From 2015 to 2021, he was a panel member of the European Space Science Committee (ESSC) of the European Science Fund (ESF). He is the author of more than 200 scientific articles and two book chapters.
