Revisiting Gandhi's Legacy in The 21st Century: Peace, Non-violence, and Conflict Resolution

More than 150 years after his birth, Mahatma Gandhi remains one of the most influential figures of the 20th century — a thinker, writer, political organiser, and social reformer whose philosophy continues to shape global politics and civic life. His principles of ahimsa (non-violence), satyagraha (truth-force), and civil disobedience have inspired transformative movements worldwide, from Martin Luther King Jr.’s Civil Rights Movement in the United States to Nelson Mandela’s struggle against apartheid in South Africa, and the Solidarity movement in Poland.

Within India, Gandhi played a pivotal role in awakening a collective moral conscience in a society divided by caste, class, gender, and religion. His leadership in the anti-imperial struggle against British rule demonstrated how peaceful resistance could become a powerful tool for political and social transformation — long before the advent of digital communication or mass media.

Join Ikya Kondapolu—an education and development practitioner from India, where her grassroots work focused on expanding educational access for underprivileged girls in rural communities—to renewed reflection on Gandhi’s legacy.
