OpenAirInterface Webinar Series Chapter 15: OAI Fronthaul Management Plane

Abstract: OpenAirInterface remains aligned with industry advancements, including comprehensive support for the Management Plane. It enables full O-RU configuration over the Fronthaul Management Plane, eliminating the need for manual intervention. The OAI O-DU connects to O-RUs, retrieves their capabilities (such as RF parameters, compression schemes, and interface configurations), subscribes to PTP synchronization state changes, and configures the CU planes accordingly. With this integration, the OAI O-DU seamlessly configures multiple O-RUs. It can also dynamically optimize the network based on deployment needs, including bandwidth and MIMO mode changes. Our ongoing efforts aim to extend Management Plane support to additional commercial O-RUs and explore hierarchical and hybrid architectures in collaboration with SMO to achieve full network automation.

About the speaker:

Teodora Vladić (OpenAirInterface): Teodora joined OpenAirInterface in October 2022 as a 5G RAN Software Engineer. She graduated in the field of Telecommunications, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in 2021 from the School of Electrical Engineering in Belgrade, Serbia. Followed later by the Master’s degree in 2022 from the Paris-Saclay University in Paris, France. Before joining the team, she pursued an internship at Orange as an O-RAN engineer. The research was based on the study of the O-RAN split 7.2x performance for massive MIMO UL into the PHY/MAC layers.

The OpenAirInterface Software Alliance (OSA) is a non-profit consortium fostering a community of industrial as well as academic contributors for open source software and hardware development for the end-to-end 4G, 5G and beyond 3GPP cellular networks. The OpenAirInterface (OAI) software includes implementations of the core network (CN), the access network (RAN) and user equipment (UE). More recently, it further includes Orchestration and Management (O&M) as well as RAN Intelligent Control (RIC) software and cloud-native deployment frameworks.

Today the OAI stack is a leading exemplar open reference design for 3GPP and Open RAN specifications with broad adoption across Academia, Industry, as well as government organizations particularly in many parts of the globe.
