Maryam Tafakory will present a performative iteration of her research-based project through archival documents, including declassified files from the final years of imperial Iran and the early post-revolution period, to offer glimpses into the role of women in a popular leftist movement that was suppressed on all fronts.

Maryam Tafakory, born and raised in Iran, works with film and performance. She holds an MFA from the University of Oxford’s Ruskin School of Art and a PhD from Kingston University London. Her work has been screened at MoMA (New York), BOZAR (Brussels), the National Gallery of Art (Washington D.C.), and the Academy Museum (Los Angeles), among other venues. Her first U.K. solo exhibition was one of Artforum’s critics’ picks of 2023. Her awards include the Gold Hugo at the 58th Chicago International Film Festival, the Best Experimental Short at the 70th and 71st Melbourne International Film Festival, the Tiger Short Award at the 51st Rotterdam International Film Festival (IFFR), Grand Prix du Court Metrage at the 43rd Amiens International Film Festival, Barbara Hammer Feminist Award at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival, among many others. She was the 2024 winner of the Film London Jarman Award.

The Rendez-Vous de l’Institut Series is generously supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
