Event description

Description

This event is organized by the Inclusive Peace & Transition Initiative, the United Nations Department of Political Affairs and the Permanent Missions of Switzerland and Sweden to the United Nations in Geneva as part of the 2017 Geneva Peace Week

Despite growing recognition of the crucial role of women in conflict resolution and prevention, women keep facing difficulties not only in accessing the negotiation table but also to influence discussion and decision-making once part of a mediation process. Women’s effective participation in peace negotiations is often hampered by the negative or indifferent attitudes of conflict parties towards inclusive processes and addressing gender-specific needs; their limited political experience and networks; and gender-discrimination stemming from broader society.

How to prevent the exclusion of women in mediation processes? Where to find concrete tools to guarantee that women’s interests are reflected in the agreements that shape tomorrow’s societies? This event aims to trigger an honest discussion from an insider’s perspective, with powerful testimonies from mediators and negotiators involved in peace negotiations in Colombia, Syria, and the Philippines.
