ICOM organises three different workshops this year on the second day of the Annual Meetings, on Thursday the 8th of June from 3:30 to 6:30 PM.


Please, choose one of the three workshops:

Workshop 1: Museum Definition, Prospects and Potentials – Room XI (Fontenoy building, Maison de l'UNESCO, Place de Fontenoy)

Jette Sandahl, chair of the new ICOM Standing Committee on Museum Definition, Prospects and Potentials, will give an introduction to the purpose, mandate and working methods, through which the committee will explore the values and practices of museums in diverse and rapidly changing societies, leading up to a possible revision of the museum definition in 2019.

The introduction will be followed by series of concurrent round-tableson different matters:

  • Relevant and important contributions which museums can make to society in the coming decade;
  • Trends and challenges faced by your country in the coming decade;
  • Trends and challenges faced by museums in your country in the coming decade;
  • How museums need to change and adapt our principles, values and working methods over the next decade to meet these challenges and enrich our contributions;

Roundtables will be moderated by members of the core group of the ICOM Standing Committee on Museum Definition, Prospects and Potentials:

  • Margaret Anderson, Australia, in English
  • Lauran Bonilla-Merchav, Costa Rica, in Spanish
  • George Abungu, Kenya, in English
  • Alberto Garlandini, Italy, in English, or French as needed

Please note that although there will be moderators speaking different languages, simultaneous interpretation will not be provided.

Workshop 2: Strategies for UNESCO Recommendation on Museums – Room XIII (Bonvin building, 1 rue Miollis)


Workshop 3: Manage your members: Come and test our new database! – Room XVI (Bonvin building, 1 rue Miollis).

After more than a year of design, development and validation, the new management tool of ICOM membership is now in the phase of deployment. It will allow you to:

  • Follow up the online membership applications and their annual renewals;

  • Manage the payments of contributions and the dues transfer to the General Secretariat;

  • Communicate with the members of the network;

3:30 to 4:30pm : English session
