Abstract - Migration as adaptation to climate change

Climate change has profound impacts on societies and economic activity. As mitigation efforts fall short of stabilisation goals, adaptation is becoming increasingly important. Migration is commonly interpreted as one adaptation strategy among others, but how should we understand its relationship with other adaptation options? This talk will explain the modelling of adaptation to climate change, and how existing models incorporate migration as a form of adaptation. I will discuss how current models incorporate critical issues such as anticipation of climate change and multiple adaptation margins. I will also discuss what we currently know about the linkages between migration and in situ adaptation, such as irrigation and crop switching.

Biography

Katrin Millock is Director of Research at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and Paris School of Economics. She is also a Fellow of IC Migrations, a French multidisciplinary institute on migration. She specialises in environmental and resource economics. She has served on the Council of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) and is currently Co-Editor of its journal Environmental and Resource Economics. Her current research focuses on the socio-economic impacts of climate extreme events and on adaptation to climate change. She holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of California, Berkeley.
