About this event

How can we design cities where walking, playing, and cycling are the easiest and most natural choices for everyone?

On 30 September 2025, Sport and Citizenship will organise a special conference in Brussels, with the support of the European Commission and in partnership with European Week of Sport, to explore the concept of “active cities”, a cross-sectoral approach that links urban planning, sport, health and sustainable mobility.

What are active and sporting cities?Active cities are urban areas designed to encourage and enable people of all ages and abilities to be physically active as part of their daily lives. They integrate sport and play into public spaces, making them accessible, safe, and inclusive. By connecting urban design with health, environment, and social inclusion goals, active cities promote both individual well-being and community resilience.

Why this mattersOur built environment shapes our routines and opportunities. From cycling lanes to inclusive playgrounds, thoughtful urban design can make physical activity a natural part of daily life, improving health, fostering social connections, and reducing environmental impact.

What to expect- Panel discussions with policymakers, urban planners, and sport sector leaders.- Inspiring case studies from across Europe.- Interactive exchanges on active mobility, public space design, and inclusive infrastructure.- A special focus on cycling as a catalyst for healthier, more sustainable cities.

This event is a unique opportunity for local authorities, researchers, civil society, and EU institutions to exchange good practices and build new collaborations, helping shape the movement-friendly cities of tomorrow.

Detailed agenda and exact address of the venue in Brussels will be announced shortly.
