Civic Courage: A World Café to Inspire Action

Have you heard about the World Café methodology? Join us for a participatory workshop that uses a structured yet informal approach to group dialogue, encouraging collaborative thinking and knowledge sharing.

In times of rising polarization and an increasingly hostile online world, civic courage—the ability to speak up, stand up, and act when witnessing injustice—has become essential. However, many people hesitate to intervene, fearing they might make situations worse or simply not knowing what to do. This event provides a safe, participatory space to explore when, how, and why to act with civic courage in everyday situations.

The World Café will feature three themed tables, each moderated by one of our Shaper:

• Civic courage in public spaces with Gwyneth Holcomb, an International Relations student specializing in human rights and passionate about social justice, international affairs, and politics.
• Civic courage at home and online with Michael Gillesberger, a Master’s student in International Economic Policy with interests in climate economics, international trade, and geoeconomics.
• Civic courage for inclusion with Esteban Serrano, a Master’s student in International Administration and research assistant for postgraduate programs in Environmental Law.

This event aims to build awareness, empathy, and confidence in responding to real-life situations that require moral and social courage. Participants will discuss concrete scenarios, exchange perspectives, and co-create realistic actions that can make a difference, whether online, in public, or at home.

Using the World Café format, you will rotate among the themed tables, each focusing on a different dimension of civic courage. The workshop seeks to empower participants to move from awareness to action, strengthening their capacity to act as responsible citizens and allies in their communities. It also reflects the spirit of the Global Shapers Community, where young people collaborate to create positive social impact.
