Columbia Global Centers in Paris, in conjunction with the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Professor Tyler Stovall, will host a celebration of his life on June 14, 2022. On the website developed by his wife Professor Denise Herd, his son Justin Stovall, and Marc Abizeid, the website designer, Tyler is beautifully described as:
“[...] a leading Black historian of France who broke barriers in the field by challenging conventional notions of a colorblind French society. With his many books and articles offering a critical analysis of European history, Professor Stovall shed new light on the role of colonialism and capitalism in creating the unequal social and economic conditions experienced by African and Arab immigrants, and the frequent social upheavals they spurred. On December 10, 2021, Professor Stovall died unexpectedly at the age of 67 in New York City, where he had recently moved after accepting a deanship at Fordham University. He had spent nearly 30 years teaching in the University of California system, holding a number of professorships and administrative positions between UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz beginning in the 1980s.”
Following his untimely death, Professors Sylvain Pattieu and Audrey Célestine hailed him in Le Monde as “a tireless bridge-builder between American and French historians” and “a pioneer in the use of the concept of race in French history, always linking social and racial issues,” writes Pattieu.
Organized by Les ami.e.s de Tyler Stovall: Richard Allen, Jennifer Boittin, Fred Constant, Audrey Célestine, James Cohen, Sarah Fila-Bakabadio, Franck Freitas-Ekué, Trica Keaton, Emmanuelle Sibeud, Sylvain Pattieu, and Monique Wells.
