Hi! Thanks for visiting the page of this Software Carpentry Workshop in Freiburg (Germany). This page will get updates in the future. If you want more information, come back to this page from time to time or feel free to contact us.
What is a "Software Carpentry Workshop"?
A Software Carpentry workshop is hands-on two-day event that covers the core skills needed to be productive in a small research team. Short tutorials alternate with practical exercises, and all instruction is done via live coding.
What are the topics covered during this workshop?
This workshop covers an introduction to UNIX (and Bash) in order to master Git, the version control system, which will be extensively covered during these two days. The second main topic is an introduction to programming with the Python programming language (Day 2).
The workshop will be held in English.
(Why) should I attend this workshop?
First, you don't need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop. If you have ever heard about Git or you know that Python is not only a snake, you are a good fit! Ideally, you want to learn about the topics covered in this workshop and you think that it might be useful for your research.
Everyone is welcome: PhD (students too), Profs, researchers in the Industry, and you. We are committed to making this workshop accessible to everybody. We have checked that the room is wheelchair / scooter accessible. Please contact us for further questions if you have special requirements.
You are required to abide by Software Carpentry's Code of Conduct though.

Other questions
- What is TailorDev? Is that a company? – Yes, TailorDev is a (French-based) company that aims at promoting Openness in Science. They help (and train) research labs and other companies to write great software and to open source their work (or open their data). "TailorDev Commons" is their way of sharing their knowledge with everyone. They will put the same energy and passion during this workshop as they would do for their clients!
- Why should I pay them registration fees? – From a legal perspective, it was the easiest way. TailorDev will use the money to cover the coffee breaks and all other expenses. The rest will be donated to the Software Carpentry Foundation. In addition, TailorDev will donate 200 USD to the Software Carpentry Foundation.
- I have a question or need more information about this workshop. – Feel free to contact us.
